Boppayakaya Pappu / Papaya Kaya Dal

  • 1 small cup Toor Dal
  • 1 cup chopped Papaya Pieces
  • 2 Green Chillies chopped
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • 1 sp Red Chilli Powder
  • 2 sp tamarind Paste
  • Salt to taste
  • For Popu :
  • 1/2 sp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/4 sp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Red Chilli crocked
  • 1 pinch Inguva / Hing
  • chopped Coriander Leaves
  • Curry Leaves
  • 2 sp Oil


  1. Wash, peel the skin of the raw papaya and cut it into half, take off the seeds in the middle of the boppayakaya & cut it into small pieces.
  2. Wash toor dal and pressure cook along with chopped papaya and green chilies for 3 whistles & turn off the stove.
  3. Let it leaves for some time, remove the lid and mash the cooked dal mixture.
  4. Heat oil in a pan add popu ingredients and fry, once done add inguva, curry leaves, coriander leaves and stir for 30 sec.
  5. Add cooked dal, salt, turmeric, red chilli powder, tamarind paste and mix it well, let it cook for couple of mins and turn off the flame.
  6. Now raw papaya dal is ready, transfer into a serving bowl and serve with rice or roti.
