Usiri kaya Pulihora / Amla Rice /Gooseberry Rice - how to prepare Usirikaya Pulihora

  • 1 cup Cooked Rice
  • 5 or 6 big size Usirikayalu
  • 3 Green Chillies chopped length-wise
  • 1/4 sp Turmeric Powder
  • 4 or 5 Cashew Nuts
  • few Peanuts
  • Salt to taste
  • For Popu :
  • 1/2 sp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 sp Chana Dal
  • 1/2 sp Urad Dal
  • 3 Red Chillies
  • few Curry Leaves
  • 1 pinch Inguva
  • 3 sp Oil


  1. Wash usiri kayalu and pat dry with a clean cloth, then grate them with a coconut grater & keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in a khadai add peanuts, cashews and fry till light golden brown & remove from the pan and set aside.
  3. Add popu ingredients to the same pan and fry, once done add curry leaves, chopped green chillies and stir- fry for 30 sec.
  4. Add grated amla (turumu), turmeric powder and mix well, cover and cook on low heat for 2 mins or till it becomes soft.
  5. Add rice, enough salt and mix everything thoroughly, then add fried nuts and mix well, turn off the heat & let stand for 5 mins.
  6. Transfer into a serving bowl, now festival recipe usiri kaya pulihora is ready to serve.
