Potlakaya Kootu / Snake Gourd Stew - Kootu Recipes

  • 1 small cup Toor Dal
  • 1 cup chopped Snake Gourd Pieces
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • For Paste :
  • 2 Red Chillies
  • 1/2 sp Coriander Seeds
  • 1/2 sp Chana Dal
  • 1/2 sp Urad Dal
  • 1/2 sp Pepper Corn
  • 1/2 sp Rice
  • few Coconut Pieces
  • 1" inch Tamarind Flake
  • For Popu :
  • 1/2 sp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 sp Urad Dal
  • 1/2 sp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Red Chilli crocked
  • 1 pinch Inguva
  • Curry Leaves
  • Coriander Leaves
  • 2 sp Oil


  1. Wash and combine toor dal, snake gourd pieces and pressure cook for 3 whistles and let it cool.
  2. Dry roast above paste ingredients (except tamarind, coconut) and fry till brown color & remove from the heat.
  3. Grind them along with tamarind, coconut into a fine paste by adding little water and set aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan add popu ingredients and fry, once done add curry leaves, ground paste and mix it well, cook for 30 sec.
  5. Then add cooked dal mixture, turmeric powder, salt and stir, if the consistency is too thick add 1/4 cup of water, let it cook for a couple of mins & turn off the flame.
  6. Now potlakaya kootu is ready, transfer in a serving bowl and garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or chapati.
