Matki Dal / Moth Peas Dal

  • 1 cup Matki/Moth Peas
  • 1 Onion finely chopped
  • 2 Green Chillies chopped lengthwise
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 sp Red Chilli Powder
  • 3 crushed Gralic Cloves
  • 1/2 sp Jaggery/Sugar
  • Salt to taste
  • For Popu :
  • 1/2 sp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/4 sp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Red Chilli
  • 2 sp Oil
  • chopped Coriander Leaves
  • Curry Leaves


  1. Wash moth peas and soak in water for 3-4 hours, then cook them in pressure cooker, once cooled mash it well and keep aside.
  2. Heat oil in a pan add popu ingredients and fry, once done add crushed garlic, curry leaves and stir for 30 secs.
  3. Then add chopped onion, green chillies and stir-cook until the onions turn soft then add red chilli powder, turmeric powder and stir well.
  4. Now add mashed moth peas, salt, jaggery and mix well, add 1/2 cup of water & let it cook on a low flame for few mins and then remove from the flame.
  5. Now moth peas dal is ready, transfer into a serving bowl, garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
