Mullangi Kootu / Radish Pepper Stew

  • 1 small cup Toor Dal
  • 1 no Mullangi/Radish/Mooli
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • For Paste :
  • fistful Coconut Pieces
  • 2 " inches Tamarind Flake
  • 1/2 sp Coriander Seeds
  • 1/2 sp Chana Dal
  • 1/2 sp Urad dal
  • 1/4 sp Black Pepper Corns
  • 1/2 sp Rice
  • 2 Red Chillies
  • For Popu :
  • 1/2 sp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 sp Urad Dal
  • 1/4 sp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Red Chilli
  • 1 pinch Hingh
  • 2 sp Oil
  • chopped Coriander Leaves
  • Curry Leaves


  1. Wash toor dal and keep aside, wash, peel mullangi and cut it into medium size pieces, then add little salt, turmeric powder and pressure cook radish pieces, toor dal in separate bowls.
  2. Meanwhile, dry roast above paste ingredients(except coconut, tamarind flake) until brown in color and then remove from the flame and allow it to cool.
  3. Once cooled, grind them into paste along with coconut and tamarind with enough water and keep aside.
  4. Heat oil in a pan add popu ingredients and fry, once done add curry leaves, ground paste and stir.
  5. Then add cooked dal, boiled radish pieces with one cup of water and stir well, add salt, turmeric powder, chopped coriander leaves and cook on low flame for a couple of mins.
  6. Now radish kootu is ready, transfer into a serving bowl and serve hot with rice or roti.
