Brown Lobia Tomato Gravy/Brown Bobbarlu Tomato Gravy Curry/Alsandalu Tomato Gravy

  • 1/2 cup Red Cowpeas/Brown Bobbarlu/Alasandalu
  • 1/2 sp Ginger Garlic Paste
  • 1/2 sp Garam Masala Powder
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 sp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 sp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 pinch Hing
  • 2 sp Fresh Cream
  • 2 sp chopped Coriander Leaves
  • Salt to taste
  • 2 tbsp Oil
  • For Paste :
  • 2 Tomatoes chopped
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 2 Green Chillies chopped


  1. Wash and soak red cowpeas for 3-4 hours and then cook them with enough water in pressure cooker for 3 whistles.
  2. Meanwhile, combine and grind paste ingredients into a smooth paste and keep aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pan add cumin seeds, hing and fry for 30 secs then add in ginger garlic paste and fry.
  4. Then add ground tomato puree, turmeric powder and cook for a couple of mins, now add cooked brown bobbarlu along with its water and mix well.
  5. Add salt, garam masala powder, chopped coriander leaves and cook for 5 mins on low flame, while stirring occasionally.
  6. When done add cream and stir, turn off the flame and transfer into a serving bowl.
  7. Now brown bobbarlu tomato gravy curry is ready to serve, serve with roti or paratha.
