Drumstick Dal / Munakkaya Pappu

  • 1 small cup Toor Dal
  • 2 no Drumsticks/Munakkayalu
  • 1 Tomato chopped
  • 2 Green Chillies chopped
  • 2 sp Tamarind Pulp
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • 1/2 sp Red Chilli Powder
  • 1/2 sp Sambar Powder
  • 2 no Garlic Cloves (optional)
  • Salt to taste
  • For Popu :
  • 1/2 sp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 sp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Red Chilli crocked
  • 1 pinch Hing
  • chopped Coriander Leaves
  • Curry Leaves
  • 2 sp Oil


  1. Wash cut drumsticks into 3 inches pieces and boil them in water till soft, then allow it cool, once cooled scrape out the inside pulp carefully with a spoon and keep aside. Don't throw out the leftover water & keep aside.
  2. Meantime, pressure cook toor dal along with tomato and green chillies, let it sit for 10 mins. Heat oil in a pan add popu ingredients and fry, once done add curry leaves, cooked dal and stir.
  3. Then add drumstick pulp, salt, turmeric, red chilli, sambar powders and mix well, now add tamarind pulp, if needed add leftover water and allow it to cook for a couple of mins. Lastly add chopped coriander leaves and mix well. Now tasty tasty drumstick dal is ready, transfer into a serving bowl and serve, it goes well with rice or roti.
