Avial Recipe / Mixed Veg Raita – How to prepare South Indian Avial Recipe

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup Yogurt/Curd
  • 1/4 cup peeled & chopped Yam/Suran/Kandgadda
  • 1/4 cup peeled and chopped Carrot
  • 1/4 cup peeled and chopped Chow Chow
  • 1/4 cup peeled and chopped Raw Banana
  • 1/4 cup peeled and chopped Potato
  • 1/4 cup chopped Beans
  • 4-5 Drumstick pieces
  • 1/4 sp Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • For Paste :
  • 3 Green Chillies
  • 1/4 cup fresh Grated Coconut
  • 1/2 sp Cumin Seeds
  • 2-3 sp Curd/Yogurt
  • For Popu :
  • 1/2 sp Mustard Seeds
  • 2 Red Chillies
  • 2 sp Oil/Coconut Oil
  • Curry Leaves
  • chopped Coriander Leaves

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel and chop all the vegetables and cook along with salt and turmeric powder, when done strain them and keep aside.
  2. Meanwhile, make a coarse paste of coconut, green chillies, cumin seeds along with 2 sp yogurt and set aside. Blend yogurt with 1/2 cup of water, enough salt until smooth and keep aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pan add mustard seeds, red chillies and fry, once done add curry leaves, cooked vegetables and stir, then add ground coconut paste and mix well. Cook on low flame for 2 mins.
  4. Now add in beaten curd and mix gently, allow it to cook for a couple of mins, after that remove from the heat and transfer into a serving bowl.
  5. Now South Indian recipe avial is ready, garnish with chopped coriander leaves and serve, it's a delicious South Indian famous recipe served as a side dish and also simple and popular recipe for Onam festival.
