Suji Kakara / Rava Appalu – how to make Odisha Traditional Recipe Semolina Kakara

Ingredients

  • 1 cup suji/Semolina/Bombay Rava
  • 11/4 cup Sugar
  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 pinch Ealichi Powder
  • 2 sp Ghee
  • Oil for deep fry

Instructions

  1. In a pan add water, sugar and bring it to a boil until the sugar dissolves, then slowly add suji and keep mixing without any lumps. Now add ealichi powder, ghee and mix well. Let it cook on low flame for a couple of mins or until it thickens. When done turn off the flame and allow it cool for some time.
  2. Once cooled knead the halwa well and make it soft. Grease your hands and divide the halwa into equal portions. Then press it gently like a small disk. Do the same procedure with the remaining balls. Heat oil in a pan on medium heat, once hot, drop the pressed balls slowly into the hot oil.
  3. Fry them till light golden brown from each side, then remove from the oil and place them on a paper towel to drain excess oil. Now Odisha traditional sweet recipe suji kakara are ready for naivedyam to Lord Ganesha during Vinayaka Chavithi festival.
