Cabbage Kootu Recipe / Patta Gobhi Pepper Stew / Cabbage Toor Dal Kootu

Ingredients

  • 1 small cup Toor Dal
  • 1 cup chopped Cabbage
  • 1 pinch Turmeric Powder
  • Salt to taste
  • For Paste :
  • 1/2 sp Coriander Seeds
  • 1/2 sp Chana Dal
  • 1/2 sp Urad Dal
  • 1/4 sp Peppercorns
  • 2 Red Chillies
  • 2 inches Tamarind flake
  • fistful Coconut Pieces
  • 1 sp Oil
  • For Popu :
  • 1/2 sp Mustard Seeds
  • 1/2 sp Urad Dal
  • 1 Red Chilli crocked
  • 1 pinch Inguva
  • Curry leaves
  • 2 sp Oil

Instructions

  1. Wash and pressure cook toor dal, chopped cabbage with 1 cup of water for 3 whistles, after that allow it to cool down for a couple of mins, once done remove the lid and keep aside.
  2. Meanwhile, heat 1 sp oil in a pan add paste ingredients and fry until they turn golden brown in color. (except tamarind & coconut)
  3. Grind them into a coarse paste along with tamarind and coconut pieces by adding little water.
  4. Heat oil in a pan add popu ingredients and fry, once done add curry leaves and fry for a few secs. Then add in cooked cabbage dal mixture, ground paste and combine well, add in 1/2 cup of water.. Add salt, turmeric powder and mix well, let it cook for a couple of mins on medium flame.
  5. When done turn off the flame and transfer into a serving bowl. Now Cabbage kootu/cabbage pepper stew is ready to serve, serve with rice and rotis.
