Ridge Gourd Dal / Andhra Birakaya Pappu Recipe

  • 1/2 cup Toor Dal
  • 1 no Birakaya
  • 1 Green Chilli chopped
  • 1 Onion chopped
  • 1 Tomato chopped
  • 1" Tamarind flake
  • 1 pinch Turmeric powder
  • 1/2 sp Red Chilli powder
  • Salt to taste
  • For Popu :
  • 1/2 sp Mastard Seeds
  • 1/2 sp Cumin Seeds
  • 1 Red Chilli crocked
  • Curry leaves
  • 2 sp Oil


  1. Soak tamarind in little water & keep aside. Wash, peel birakaya and cut into small pieces.
  2. Combine and pressure cook toor dal, onion, greenchilli, birakaya and tomato pieces. Let the cooker cool, remove the lid and mash it.
  3. Heat oil in a pan add popu ingredients and fry, once done add curry leaves, mashed birakaya dal and mix well.
  4. Add tamarind pulp, red chilli, turmeric powders, salt and stir well, cook for 5 mins on low-medium flame. When done turn off the flame and transfer into a serving bowl.
  5. Now ridge gourd dal/birakaya pappu is ready to serve, it is a good combination for rice and chapatis.
